A NEW speed limit sign has been keeping motorists guessing. The 50mph sign was put up on the A370 in Hewish in March on the instruction of the Safety Camera Partnership, but has been positioned behind a tree, making it impossible for passing motorists to read when the tree is in leaf.Peter Jones, who regularly travels the route, contacted the Mercury after passing the sign and realising it could not be read. The 63-year-old former sales manager said: "I do not know which muppet was involved in putting the sign up, but if you place a road sign directly behind a tree then it is obvious not much is going to be seen when the tree is in leaf."Perhaps we should have a 'guess the speed limit' competition."David Gollicker, road safety manager at the Safety Camera Partnership, said: "I am aware of the situation and have asked North Somerset highways authority to cut back the tree.
