A LEADING gymnasium in Portishead, which is home to gold medal winning athletes, is on the move. The Academy Of Gymnastics, which is currently based at Harbour Road, is moving to larger premises on the site.Bosses at the popular academy made the decision to move after deciding its current base was too small. It now faces having to find £25,000 to finance the move to the new unit and update its equipment.Currently the academy teaches 340 pre school and recreational gymnasts and is the training base of Commonwealth Gold medallist Imogen Cairns.Academy spokesman Sally McAllister said: "Our current premises are too small and we do not have a full size floor square or full length vault run."To allow us to be self sufficient and expand our class base we are moving to a larger property next door to our current premises."We hope to move over Easter, however a lot of work is required before the move can take place and needless to say this has financial implications."The academy is the only elite gymnastics centre in North Somerset and the elite team, which train at the centre, have scooped a number of medals in the Commonwealth and British championships.Liz Kincaid, who is head coach at the academy, was also selected to represent Great Britain as one of the national coaches at the World Championships and Commonwealth Games in Australia.
