CARDS for cats and dogs have been arriving by the dozen at the RSPCA in Brent Knoll, after the Weston & Somerset Mercury ran its 12 Strays of Christmas feature. The article, which appeared on the front of our December 22 edition, touched the hearts of Mercury readers, and the RSPCA has received dozens of telephone enquiries about the animals. Deputy manager Emma Phillips said: "We received Christmas cards addressed to the strays featured in the article. Andy the dog and Rascal the cat have been the favourites. All the cats have now been reserved."Matthew Brain, of Exeter Road, Weston, decided Holly the cat would be the ideal pet for him and his fiancee Astra Morton. Matthew said: "We were going to get a cat after we married in September, but after seeing the article we decided to visit the RSPCA. "Twig was completely insane and Rascal was already taken. When I saw Holly I just fell in love with her."Holly is now being held for Matthew until the RSPCA makes its final checks. The charity inspects each house to ensure it is a good home for the animal. For cats they have to check the family are not on a main road, and for dogs the garden has to be secure. Matthew added: "I can't wait to have her at home. I've got my fingers crossed."Anyone who is interested in adopting an animal should call the Brent Knoll centre on 01278 782671.
