As the nights continue to draw in, people living in a new housing development in Weston-super-Mare are having to face the dark nights without streetlights.

Haywood Village’s streetlights have not yet been adopted by North Somerset Council and so still fall under the responsibility of the site’s developers Persimmon Homes and Charles Church.

But, the developers are yet to turn the area’s streetlights on, prompting concerns from residents who have already moved into the village.

Hannah Kingsbury, who lives in Cobham Parade, said: “The streetlights are not on, ever.

“There have been many garages and cars broken into – it is making everyone feel unsafe.”

A spokesman for Persimmon Homes and Charles Church told the Mercury residents have brought to their attention the issue of ‘some streetlights’ not working.

They added: “An audit has already been instructed and the site team have identified the streetlights that need attention.”

But the spokesman said they could not provide an exact date as to when streetlights will all be switched on.

They told the Mercury it is ‘all being progressed as soon as possible’.
