How to stay motivated during lockdown

It is week seven of the third national lockdown which means many of us are bound to be feeling a bit fed up. The current cold snap may have put a lot of people off from venturing outside and while the dark nights linger, many of us stay on the sofa watching a box sets rather than getting our hearts pumping.
However, regular exercise is a proven way to lift our mood and must therefore form an important part of everyday life in order to help us get through the current national lockdown.
Jason Eaton, general manager at theclub and spa at Cadbury House in Congresbury is encouraging people to stay motivated as the first glimmer of light appears at the end of this latest lockdown tunnel.
Jason said: “Our bodies are meant to move and over the past 12 months a lot of us have being doing a lot less! It’s been well documented that as a nation, we’ve all been watching a lot more TV and means we’re being less active.
“Unfortunately, this doesn’t help with both physical and mental wellbeing so it’s important to maintain some form of routine with regard to exercise. Otherwise we’ll just spiral downwards even more, making it tougher to pick ourselves back up.
“I completely understand that constantly motivating yourself to go for a run or take an aerobic class in your home has become a little tedious and wearisome, however I can’t stress enough that by doing exercise will make you feel a whole lot better.
“The good news is the nights are slowly getting lighter, the Government’s vaccine programme is on track and cases of Covid-19 are dropping so hopefully we’ll get some good news soon with regards to the latest lockdown.

“In the meantime, putting in place a plan with achievable goals will help get us off the sofa and on the first steps to a healthy body and mind.
“Setting yourself goals has to be within the limits of what you’re comfortable doing and fun of course. So, for those who already do regular exercise, this could be, for example, in any one month riding 200 miles on your bike, running 52 miles or walking 26 miles.
“Or you could set yourself a series of mini challenges such as walking every street close to where you live or walking up and down the stairs 10 times. Those who are more young at heart, could go and climb a different tree each day!
“I’d also recommend just switching off the TV and putting some music on which you can dance around to. Alternatively, watch a concert of your favourite band while you work out. Everyone is different, so do what works for you, but the main thing is to do something.”
