One of the big considerations many of us have had to take on board during the past 14 months is maintaining regular exercise in the comfort of our own home.

The latest setback on the road out of lockdown – with full easing of restrictions not now expected until July 19 – means many of us will have to keep up our own exercise regimes just that little bit longer.

Despite health clubs and gyms now operating, some people still prefer to stay at home until full easing of restrictions are introduced.

One form of exercise that has become increasingly popular for gym-goers but can also be easily done from home is something called HIIT.

For those not too sure of what this strange sounding form of exercise is, HIIT stands for High Intensity Interval Training.

Comprising a wide range of exercises that can be easily done at home or in the gym, it boosts metabolism and builds strength. It burns a lot of calories in a relatively short space of time, is great for burning fat and helps tone the body. It also helps reduce heart rate and blood pressure. What’s not to like?!

Whether it’s air punches, burpees, butt kicking, high knees, push ups, side jumps, the range and breadth of exercises is vast. But do expect to feel the burn! The beauty of HIIT is, you don’t need any equipment to get a great workout. And you can choose from short or longer sessions with some programmes lasting just five minutes.

Jason Eaton from the club at Cadbury House, in Congresbury, said: “HIIT is a great form of exercise and really gets the heart pumping. It’s also a terrific way to exercise at home so anyone can do it.

“Of course, if you’re struggling with self-motivation, then taking part in a HIIT session in an organised class is a great way to get rid of those Covid kilos. You’ll also be inspired and encouraged by your fellow HIIT buddies as well as the expert instructors.

“And once you’ve got into the groove, we’ve found that members here at the club and spa can’t get enough and return week-in, week-out for their HIIT fix that’s taken by Kate one of our superb fitness instructors."
