For those embarking on a new exercise programme, one important aspect that often gets overlooked is the importance to let the body rest and recover.

Jason Eaton, general manager at theclub and spa at Cadbury House, knows all too well the importance to rest, having played professional football for many years.

Jason said: “Rest and recovery is an important aspect of any exercise programme because it allows the body time to repair and strengthen itself in between workouts.

“It’s important as it replenishes glycogen (energy stores) and provides time for body tissue to repair itself.

“For recreational athletes, which includes most of us, including rest days can help maintain a better balance between home, work and achieving your fitness goals. Don’t feel guilty either by not doing any exercise on certain days. The benefits far outweigh the risks.

“Recovery also allows for improved performance as it allows the body to heal itself in preparation for the next round of exercise. It also helps decrease the risk of injury.

“Getting enough sleep is also an important element of any exercise programme as this is the time when the body can recover and making sure you drink enough water and eat the right food are also important factors.

“And don’t forget to warm up properly and also cool down as this helps remove lactic acid in the muscles while also bringing down your heart rate.

“Here at the club we’ve got the perfect recipe for members and guests to recover. The steam rooms, saunas, quiet room and hot tubs are all great ways to relax. The spa also provides deep tissue massages as well as more relaxing treatments and are open to all.

“The key message I think is don’t overdo it and let your body recover. That way you’ll get a lot more from your exercise and you’ll really feel the benefits."
