How to exercise safely during the hot weather

During the current heatwave, those who are keen to maintain some regularity in terms of exercise, might find with the thermometer reaching close to 90 degrees Fahrenheit, it’s a little excessive for the regular jog or bike ride.
But high temperatures don’t mean you have to stop completely and there are plenty of things you can do - and perhaps should do – when it gets a little hotter than we’re used to.
Jason Eaton, general manager at the club and spa, Cadbury House provides some top tips for those still wanting to exercise when it’s warm.
Drink plenty of fluids before, during and after exercise
It’s vitally important to make sure you’ve taken on plenty of fluid at least an hour before you exercise. Then, during your workout, to keep sipping often.
If you’re undertaking a longer work out, then sports drinks that contain electrolytes would be a good idea. Otherwise, cool water, as it gets absorbed quickly.
Don’t eat just before you go out

Digesting food heats up the body, so if you’re already warm, suggest having something light at least an hour before you exercise. Anything more substantial, then you’ll need to give it longer.
Wear appropriate clothing
Cotton generally keeps heat in so it’s highly advisable to wear sports clothing that has been designed to keep the body cool and wicks away moisture and sweat. If you’re wearing minimum sports clothing, make sure that you’ve applied sunscreen to your skin if exercising outside.
Change time of day for your work out
Getting up early to go for a jog or bike ride is one way to beat the heat and you’ve then got the rest of the day to do other things. Alternatively, wait until later in the evening and as it stays lighter for longer, means you can still get your workout in.
Take is easy
When it’s hot, it might be prudent to hold back a little and not over-exert yourself. Don’t forget your body will have to work harder when it’s hot, so there’s no harm easing off a little.
