A FACE to face meeting could take place between Worle traders and top council officials to reach an agreement on a one way system.Councillor John Crockford-Hawley, who is in charge of North Somerset's roads, wants to meet round the table with traders to discuss a proposed three-day closure of the High Street to traffic.North Somerset Council officers wanted to shut the road to traffic for three days in September as part of a European-wide initiative called In Town Without My Car. The closure would have acted as an experiment for a permanent closure. But many traders have reacted angrily to the idea and warned that the High Street would die at a meeting with council officials last week. The idea may now be scrapped.Cllr Crockford-Hawley, the council's executive member for planning and transport, said: "In the light of information from councillors Gosden and Brand I have no wish to proceed with the scheme in the face of trader opposition."But the council is obliged to look at the safety of the road."I will be calling a round the table meeting in the next few weeks with representatives of the traders and the council to discuss the issue in a constructive atmosphere."The three-day closure would have come into effect between The Lamb Inn and The Maltings."I will need to look at the implications of withdrawing from the scheme," said Cllr Crockford-Hawley."I think the feeling is the council has a preferred option and it is going through the motions of consulting people, but that is not so."The three day experiment would have allowed us to look in more detail at any displacement that takes place away from the High Street. "The three day closure has some positive aspects but there is no point proceeding with it unless we have the support of the traders.
