An attempt to remove restrictions on delivery times at a planned supermarket in Highbridge has been criticised.

Aldi has applied to Sedgemoor District Council in a bid to remove a planning condition limiting delivery hours from 6am-11pm at its new store in Bennett Road, Highbridge.

The supermarket chain wants to allow deliveries to be made at any time, but Burnham and Highbridge town councillors believe this would disrupt residents living nearby during night-time hours.

More than 60 people signed a petition against the development earlier this year due to concerns it will harm local businesses.

The Aldi store, which is due to open in 2018, is expected to create 14 full-time and 26 part-time jobs.

A final decision on the supermarket’s delivery hours will be made by Sedgemoor District Council which is currently considering the application.
