Fire crews tackled a blaze yesterday (Thursday) on a field where a 130 homes have been earmarked for development.

Initially one team from Burnham-on-Sea was sent to reports of a fire in the Isleport Business Park area at 2.15pm, but while investigating other reports came in about a wildfire at Lakeside, behind the business park.

A spokesman for Burnham Fire Station said: “Crews worked tirelessly in hot, arduous conditions to extinguish the fire.

“The fire was extinguished at 5.15pm using two main jets, one CAFFS jet, one hose reel and fire beaters.

“A further call was received by control for a wildfire along the M5 and the incident commander called for extra appliances from Burnham supported by Bridgwater and Cheddar.”

Plans to build 130 homes on the land have received strong opposition from people of Highbridge.

More than 50 homeowners voiced their concerns at a meeting with developer Toni Hammick earlier this month.
