A DERELICT hotel in Highbridge was gutted by flames this evening.

Fire crews were called to the Highbridge Hotel in Huntspill Road shortly before 5pm after reports that a fire had started within the building.

Two engines from Burnham arrived, and requested a hydraulic platform and another engine from Bridgwater, with crews using hose reel jets to tackle the blaze, which took over around a third of the building.

The incident led the police to close the A38 in both directions due to the amount of smoke blowing over the road from the fire, before the fire crews left the scene after 8.30pm.

The building has been empty for several years, and a huge blaze in April 2008 left it severely damaged.
