WORK could finally start on a 12-acre £500,000 sports complex on the edge of Weston by the end of the summer.Bosses at Mead Realisations and officials at Worle Football Club have been working on plans to build a sports pavilion, four football pitches, a cricket pitch, bowling green and changing rooms on land off Ebdon Road in Wick St Lawrence since 1997.Now the project's principal sponsor, developer Derek Mead, says he wants to start work as soon as possible so the pitches will be ready for use at the start of next season.Mr Mead said: "This is an essential development for the area. There is a big population and it will bring the community together. It is good to support voluntary organisations like football clubs."We can get a percentage of local kids occupied and get them involved in team games instead of sitting on street corners."Worle Football Club is hoping to transfer to the new ground once work is completed. Club chairman Dennis Cole has been busy working on securing grants for the development since 1997. He says his application for £200,000 to help fund the project is looking optimistic and could be decided within weeks.Mr Cole said: "We have applied to the FA Foundation and are awaiting the outcome and it is looking more than hopeful."A the moment we have poor facilities at Worle Rec in Station Road."The football club is going up the league but in order to progress we are required to have improved facilities. If we don't get them we can't move forward."Mr Mead was given full planning permission in August 2003 to begin the development, which will partly be funded by grants, within five years. The parking facilities have already been created.Once the complex is up and running the facilities will be open to any sports clubs in the area which wants to rent the pitches or bowling green.
