A HORSE had to be rescued from a water-filled ditch near Axbridge last night.

Fire crews were called to Brewery Farm in Cross at 8.50pm to reports of a horse stuck in a rhyne up to its shoulder in water.

Two appliances from Cheddar were joined by a specialist rescue team from Avon Fire and Rescue Service.

Firefighters put on life jackets before using straps and lines to free the horse, which was eventually removed from the rhyne at 9.50pm.
