Weston General Hospital has launched a campaign to encourage staff to be more active – simply by walking around the grounds.

Three walking routes have been created around the hospital – each a kilometre long – which take 10 minutes to complete on foot.

Each one is said to burn around 50 calories. The routes are also available for use by visitors and patients and are titled Take Ten.

Benches have also been allocated to the route to allow for regular rest and to appeal to all levels of fitness.

This campaign is in conjunction with Men’s Health Week – which is running throughout this week.

However, the hospital is keen to encourage everyone to get moving a little bit more in a bid to get fit, as well as to relieve stress.

A cycle to work initiative has also been launched by the hospital to encourage healthy working lives.

James Rimmer, chief executive of Weston Area Health NHS Trust, which runs the hospital, said: “Working in a busy hospital can be very stressful, yet studies show that walking has a positive impact on overall health and wellbeing.

“We hope that our short walking routes will provide a really convenient stress busting outlet for all our hard working NHS staff”.

A Men’s Health Week stand – with a range of information on keeping active – will be on display at Weston General today (Thursday) between 11am-3pm.
