Hot topic: Not all in favour of CCTV plans

A STORY in the Mercury, surrounding the council's investment in better quality CCTV cameras, sparked conversation on Streetlife this week.
Kieren D started the thread, and said: “I’m not sure, with the other issues this town has, that this is the best use of funds.
“I would prefer more money to be spent on helping solve the local issues, not monitoring my footsteps.
“CCTV is no more effective in public places than a policeman on the beat.”
Jim L said: “There isn’t much point having CCTV if the picture quality isn’t sufficient enough to be used as evidence.
“Crime costs everyone money and I bet a few improved cameras aren’t very much in the grand scheme of things.”
David B agreed, and said: “The better the quality, the more identifiable the wrong doers will be and the safer for those out, particularly late at night.”
Valerie W called for more officers on the beat, she said it’s better to prevent crime, not ‘record crime in hope of catching them after the event’.
Jim L said: “Obviously I’d much rather we had greater levels of policing, but their budgets have been slashed. CCTV is sadly a much cheaper option.”
