A PHOTOGRAPH of lifesavers in action has won an annual charity competition.

Howard Evans, a fund-raiser for Weston's RNLI, won first prize at the Photographer of the Year 2009 contest held in London.

The picture shows the town's crew launching a D-class inshore lifeboat through the surf.

Howard said: "I was surprised when I was told I'd been shortlisted but I was very pleased to win."

Howard and his wife Marion fund-raise for the RNLI and he took the pictures on an open day in Weston.

He added: "It was quite gusty and showery at times - a normal summer's day.

"The crew were launching the boat in difficult conditions and I just caught them at the right moment - they did all the work really.
