Hundreds of objections have been submitted against a scheme which would see a caravan park and swimming pool built on the outskirts of Weston.

Mead Realisations has proposed the 320-caravan holiday park for seven fields off Sand Road in Kewstoke.

If approved by North Somerset Council, the site would include a two-storey leisure building with a swimming pool, gym, bar and restaurant.

However, the plans have received widespread objections from villagers, who say the development would change the character of Kewstoke, which would also struggle to cope with the additional traffic.

One objection, by Roger and Judith Hook, who live in Sand Road, says: “Information supplied with the application does nothing to allay the fears expressed by local residents that the proposed holiday park would have serious adverse impacts on the environment, local amenity and character of the Sand Bay and Kewstoke area.

“The local area around Kewstoke/Sand Bay area attracts walkers and nature lovers because of the environmental qualities of the local area: the beach, Sand Point, Woodspring Priory, Kewstoke Woods and the levels and rhynes with their distinctive wildlife habitats.

“The proposed holiday park would be a large addition to the existing supply of holiday parks.”

Mead Realisations believes the scheme would benefit the tourism industry in Kewstoke, and provide economic benefits for the whole of North Somerset.

Documents submitted with the application say: “The leisure facility proposed in association with the change of use of the land will provide a swimming pool facility so as to expand the suitability of the site for continued use throughout the year rather than reliance solely on the beach.

“In addition, this facility will be open to the local community and will improve the community facilities available to villagers and improve opportunities for access to healthy leisure pursuits.”

Concerns have been raised by the North Somerset Levels internal drainage board, about the risk of flooding.

Sheila Stitson of Crookes Lane also objected, saying the roads are ‘totally unsuitable’ for the amount of traffic.

Commenting on the application will close today (Thursday).
