THE search is on for a piece of land where teenagers can use their mini motos to stop them illegally riding on the roads.Residents on the Bournville, Oldmixon and Coronation estates in Weston have made numerous complaints to police about antisocial behaviour and youngsters riding the miniature motorbikes on pavements, grass verges and roads.Police have the powers to confiscate the bikes if they are used on the road without a licence, insurance or MOT certificate.Officers want to find a piece of land near to the estates to cut down on their illegal use.Sergeant Gareth Starr, who leads the South Ward Community Focus Team, said officers have been looking for land for the bikes but had been unsuccessful. He said: "These youngsters just want a piece of land to ride their bikes on, but they are breaking the law to have a bit of fun."These bikes have a real potential for accidents if they're driven on the road and someone could get killed."Skateboarding used to be the in thing and ramps were made for the youngsters. We now need a bit of land to deal with this new craze."Three bikes were seized in North Worle in March under the Road Traffic Act 1988 and one mini moto was crushed. A fee is charged to release any seized machines.Councillor John Crockford-Hawley, North Somerset Council's executive member for strategic planning and transport, said he would work with police to find a suitable piece of land.He said: "We can't bury our heads in the sand and think that these bikes don't exist."A place is needed for them as they shouldn't be used on the roads, pavements or beach.
