The stage was set and the Christmas lights were lit for the new festive attraction which will remain in place until the new year.

The UK’s biggest ice rink opened on Friday night with some brilliant performances from the Cardiff Ice Skating Club and CBBC Ice Starts Ella George Cook.

There was also a special guest appearance from X Factor runner-up and Dancing On Ice champion Ray Quinn, who took to the ice for the first time since winning the skating show four and a half years ago.

Families, friends and couples watched the professionals’ flips and tricks before shakily stepping onto the ice themselves for the first official skating session.

Operations manager Jamie Dann said: “The opening night was a great success.

“The show before the first public skate was so impressive. They were all incredible on the ice.

“There was a real buzz around the whole place and this continued throughout the evening – with people enjoying a skate on the rink, a drink in the Igloo Bar, a bite to eat as well as rides on the Snow Slide and Santa’s Sleigh.

“We hope families come and enjoy all the attractions we have on offer over the Christmas period.

“We are also very excited for Santa’s arrival when his Grotto opens from November 17 to December 24.”

Ray Quinn told the Mercury: “It feels great to be back on the ice. I really enjoyed it, the crowd were great and the turn out was fantastic and it had a great atmosphere.

“Things like this are so important to cities and towns across the UK because they just bring the family together and I am all about that.”

Ray stuck around for the first session, skating with the public and smiling for photos.
