NHS bosses have moved to allay fears over the immediate future of a vital mental health centre in Burnham.
The Somerset Partnership NHS Foundation Trust has quashed speculation that Belmont House was about to close by saying that although some services may be diverted, the centre itself will not close.
The centre in Technical Street provides assessment and treatment of mental health patients through therapy, but some of theses services might still be outsourced to other medical centres in and around the town as the trust admitted there are concerns about the quality of the building.
Those concerns were raised by town councillors and members of the Windows Carers group, who feared the centre may fall victim to budget cuts.
But a spokesman for the trust said: “There is no question of the existing services at Belmont House being stopped or the building being closed before patient and carer views have been properly considered and alternative premises identified and services fully established.”
