A Somerset village hosted its annual racing extravaganza this week, as daring thrill-seekers descended down a steep hill in homemade go-karts.

Shipham’s soap box derby drew a big crowd on Monday, as brave villagers made the most of their bank holiday by hurtling down the sledging field, off Top Road.

Some opted for more traditional karts with mixed results, while others were more innovative with their creations – with one speedster tackling the race in a bath tub on wheels.

Not all drivers made it to the finish line, with some being thrown from their karts at high speed.

A more tranquil afternoon followed at the May Day fair on the village green.
