AN INQUEST into the deaths of two men who drowned after swimming off Weston's coastline is due to be heard today (Wed).

Lee Tompkins and Dave Ellams stripped down to their boxers shorts and jumped into the sea next to the Royal Pier Hotel on June 23 last year.

The pair said they were going to swim to the end of Birnbeck Pier and back, but were dragged down by the under current on their way back.

A massive search and rescue operation was launched through the night but their bodies were recovered from the water a week later.

Lee, aged 33, worked as a receptionist at the Anchor Head Hotel. He was a father to four children and had been dating girlfriend Emma Flinders for just five weeks at the time of his death.

His 35-year-old friend Dave was a chef at Dauncey's Hotel and had been dating girlfriend Aimee for more than three years.

The inquest hearing will take place at Flax Bourton Coroner's Court at 2pm.
