Investigation to begin after 'severe' flat fire

AN INVESTIGATION will get under way today (Wednesday) to establish what caused a 'severe' flat fire in Weston-super-Mare.

Dozens of firefighters spent hours tackling the blaze in Beach Road after being called at about 4.50pm.

They finally gained control at about 9pm although many remained on site overnight as a precaution.

Ambulance crews were on the scene and two casualties were treated at the scene for smoke inhalation.

A spokesman for Avon Fire and Rescue Service: “Firefighters have remained on the scene of the incident overnight and will continue to be there this morning.

“All persons have now been accounted for and no rescues were carried out by Avon Fire & Rescue Service.

“At the height of the fire more than 50 firefighters were on scene dealing with the blaze which was fully extinguished by 10.50pm.

“Crews have been on scene all night damping down and checking for hotspots.

“An investigation into the cause of the now underway and is expected to continue today.”
