A NEW scheme to help people cut waste and change their lifestyle to recycle more began this week across Somerset.

Each week of the month-long scheme will have a different theme aiming to get people to be more environmentally friendly.

Residents across the county can sign up and receive a free recycling pack which includes a week-by-week guide, checklists, challenges and stickers.

They will also receive email updates and useful online tools such as food diaries and shopping reminders from the Somerset Waste Partnership (SWP). It says the average family wastes £600 of food annually and that it needs to be tackled to reduce the £8million-per-year landfill bill for Somerset.

The themes will be smarter shopping, saving food, clutter busting and better recycling.

Smarter shopping tips include using your own bags and avoiding impulse purchases and ‘buy one, get one free’ offers.

The scheme will also advise on finding the best recycled, charity or second-hand goods.

A spokesman for the Somerset Waste Partnership said: “Green Routine’s most important advice is to have fun and feel good.

“In just a month, getting into new helpful habits could see many in Somerset saving cash, wasting less, getting greener and diverting more from costly landfill.”
