GREEN-FINGERED Weston residents grabbed their trowels and got stuck into tidying Jill Dando's garden.

Pete McAleer, of Florence Grove Road, called upon residents to meet in Grove Park to help revitalise Jill’s Garden – 10 years after it was created.

The BBC’s Ground Force team, led by Alan Titchmarsh, first created the sanctuary, complete with fountain, in memory of Weston’s favourite daughter.

Pete, aged 59, said: “Half a dozen volunteers turned up to give Jill’s garden a thorough clean.

“Most litter was alcohol related debris and it looked so disgusting that we felt we had to photograph a section of it, before binning it.

“This year also commemorates Jill’s 50th birthday so we thought we should not let this moment pass.”

Jill, who was born in Weston and worked at the Weston Mercury, died in 1999 after being shot outside her London home.
