UNEMPLOYMENT in North Somerset is up 50 per cent in the past year, while weekly pay has fallen.

UNEMPLOYMENT in North Somerset is up 50 per cent in the past year, while weekly pay has fallen.

The number of people claiming job seekers allowance stood at 3,145 in December, equivalent to 2.6 per cent of the population.

In the same period average weekly pay of a North Somerset worker fell by £11, from £480.40 to £469.

People out of a job in the parliamentary constituency of Weston total 2,177, 3.4 per cent of the population and the highest figure since March 1997.

The rate in the town is twice that of neighbouring Woodspring and 0.7 per cent higher than the Wells constituency.

In Weston there are 6.6 unemployed people for every spare job advertised at Jobcentre plus.
