Prime Minister Theresa May has handed Weston-super-Mare MP John Penrose a role in Government.

Mr Penrose has been appointed minister of state for the Northern Ireland office.

The 54-year-old has been Weston’s MP for the past 13 years, ever since the Conservatives regained the seat from the Liberal Democrats.

He has held a number of posts in the past including a role within the Department for Culture, Media and Sport in the run up to the London Olympics in 2012.

He has also been the anti-corruption champion in recent times.

Mr Penrose’s promotion comes on a day of significant political manoeuvring following a series of resignations in protest of Mrs May’s Brexit plan.

Amber Rudd has been reappointed to the Cabinet, with the former Home Secretary taking the lead role at the Department for Work and Pensions.

Meanwhile Stephen Barclay has become the new Brexit Secretary, in place of Dominic Raab.

Dr Liam Fox, North Somerset’s MP, has not resigned from the Cabinet and remains Secretary of State for International Trade and Development.
