AN OIL thief is being sought by police after a spate of late-night thefts this week.

Avon and Somerset Constabulary have appealed to people in rural North Somerset to be on the lookout for ‘unfamiliar or suspicious vehicles’, following calls from residents in Wick St Lawrence at around 5am on Wednesday, when they saw a man tampering with a fuel tank at a property in the village.

Officers found no trace of the man despite carrying out a detailed search, but recovered a car containing fuel containers later that morning in Upper Bristol Road, Weston.

They also believe the theft may be connected to another incident involving a heating oil tank yesterday (Thursday), as well as other offences carried out last month.

Neighbourhood beat manager PC Jim Murray said: “We had two reports of thefts and attempted thefts from heating oil tanks at other properties in Wick St Lawrence in February.

“We have carried out house-to-house enquiries in the affected areas and sent messages out through Farm Watch and other watch schemes.”

If you have any information relating to the incident, call police on 101 quoting reference 24847/15.
