PENSIONERS in North Somerset are being urged to rebel against the council tax system by withholding their January instalment.Members of Weston Senior Citizens' Forum will next week vote on whether to keep hold of the payment as part of a long-running campaign. It costs two people living in a band D property in North Somerset an average of £127 in council tax every month. The forum's 800 members could cost the council an estimated £101,000 in lost revenue if they take a stand.Forum chairman Ken Lacey said: "I will be putting it before members that we don't pay the January instalment in protest."My generation comes from an age where we always pay our bills and some people still feel that way. I think the Government relies on us still feeling that way. It's election year for the council in 2007 and we hope the party leaders will listen to our plea for a zero per cent increase."The stand is part of a national campaign for senior citizens not to pay their council tax due to recent rises. The move comes as North Somerset Council revealed it is still chasing £1.2 million in unpaid council tax from last year.Hundreds of people were ordered to settle over £1million of unpaid tax bills in the district last month. Orders affecting 890 people owing council tax and 150 firms owing business rates were issued by North Somerset Magistrates Court.A council spokesman said the authority's collection rate was 98.5 per cent and £2million in arrears was collected last year.
