Following the Somerset County Council elections earlier this month, some key appointments were made at the authority's annual meeting yesterday (Wednesday).

Councillor David Fothergill was elected as leader and it was also announced that Cllr David Hall will continue his role as deputy leader.

Cllr William Wallace was elected as chairman of the council and Cllr Peter Burridge-Clayton – who is also a councillor for Burnham and Highbridge Town Council – has been elected as vice chairman.

The appointments were proposed by the Conservative Group and unanimously supported by councillors at the meeting, after the party enjoyed a clean sweep in the election on May 4.

Liberal Democrat councillor, Cllr Jane Lock, was elected as the leader of the opposition and cabinet members were also chosen.
