A FETE which has been a fixture on a village calendar for more than 50 years could be wound up because nobody will step forward to run it.Congresbury's summer fete enjoyed its best year yet in 2006, with record attendances and perfect weather.Members of the management committee announced they would be stepping down more than a year ago, but nobody has come forward to save the event. The last meeting of the current committee took place this week and members were hoping for a good turnout at the War Memorial Hall after months of appealing for new volunteers. But just three people turned up for the meeting and none of them were looking to take over the reins of running the fete. The past committee had run the event for around five years and felt it was time to let someone else have a go.The finances and legal documents have all been handed over to the parish council but, if nobody steps forward soon, the fete may have to be cancelled as planning the event starts months before it takes place.Former committee member Ron Hall, a project manager by trade, said: "It's very disappointing that we are still in the same position despite so many months passing."The fete was such a success this year, we had more people than ever before, and the finances are in a healthy state."There is money in the fete's account and we have agreed to hand it over to the parish council while there is no management committee. There is no other option really. I don't think people realise the impact of having no fete. It's a big thing for everyone involved but it is also when the horticultural society's summer show takes place."The show is a huge event for all those involved, and not just those in Congresbury."Anyone who wants to help run the fete should call Ron on 07770 738091.
