Launching a fun lifeboat week
PUBLISHED: 17:30 17 August 2012
WESTON will be going lifeboat crazy from Saturday for the RNLI’s second lifeboat week, after the success of last year’s inaugural seven-day fundraising extravaganza.
A raft race, hog roasts, live music and lifeboat demonstrations will be held in the town over the week, starting on Saturday, to raise money for the volunteer lifeboat charity.
The action will end with a spectacular day of RNLI events on August 26, with children getting the chance to dress up as lifeboat crews and see high-speed ‘Zap Cat’ boats in action.
Spokesman Glyn Hayes said: “Dedicated RNLI volunteer crewmen frequently risk their lives to save people they have never met and yet they ask for nothing in return.
“We look forward to the people of Weston and its visitors supporting this vital service during the week, to ensure the future of the RNLI in Weston.”
The charity’s work is funded solely by donations and has been operating for 130 years.
A quiz, compiled by TV Egghead Daphne Fowler, will be held at the Italian Gardens from 9.30am-4.30pm every day except August 22, 25 and 26, with an RNLI souvenir stall and second hand book shop available alongside it.
Some of the week’s events are:
■ Saturday: A bar and hog roast will be held from 9.30am-4.30pm in the Italian Gardens.
■ Sunday: A bar and hog roast will be held at the Italian Gardens from 9.30am-4.30pm, with music by Uncle John’s Folk Rock Band from noon to 3pm.
