A VOLUNTEER at the Burnham Area Youth Centre (BAY) found 36 metres of lead had been stolen from the centre, when investigating a leak.

Vice chairman of the BAY centre, Mike Lang said: “Is nowhere safe? We work hard to keep this community building available for use by the community, and it appears nowhere is immune from scrap metal theft.”

Last weekend’s rain showers showed several leaks in the youth centre. This brought about the discovery of the stolen lead, which was taken from the inner roof coping stones.

Mr Lang said: “Meanwhile, our maintenance volunteers have worked hard all weekend to replace the missing lead with non valuable roof covering, and we remain committed in our £33,000 grant money quest for the roof replacement project.”
