PLANS to develop a leisure park in Burnham have been dealt a blow after the district council said it would not help fund the project.

Entrepreneur Paul Chatwin’s proposal would see a mini-golf course, children’s fairground rides and chalets built on a site on the South Esplanade.

But Sedgemoor District Council’s capital planning group, which met last week, has indicated it will not contribute the £60,000 requested as part of the bid to build the chalets.

The future of the proposal, which has received a mixed reaction in the town, is already in the balance as the earmarked site is the subject of a village green bid currently being considered by Somerset County Council.

A spokesman for the district authority said: “This group is not a decision-making body. However, they did re-iterate that we have no funds to support this initiative.”
