TWO North Somerset councillors say small video shops could go out of business if a new DVD rental service at Weston Library continues.Last week North Somerset Council announced the library is now offering top title rentals from the Premium Collection for £2.50 a week. But councillors Peter Burden and Elfan ap Rees have issued a joint statement criticising the new service.Cllr Burden said: "What are we trying to do, put these shops out of business? It is difficult enough to survive in North Somerset now without the council getting in on the act.Cllr ap Rees added: "I can see the value of making available educational material on DVD but it is hard enough to encourage people to read books now and carry out sufficient exercise without giving them reason to sit for another two hours in front of a TV screen."The first titles include Basic Instinct 2, The Weatherman, Capote and Alien Autopsy.Councillor Deborah Yamanaka, North Somerset Council's executive member responsible for the library service, said: "DVD collections in our libraries have a much wider range of titles than those available in the average video store, including vintage, children's, world, television, sport and local history. All this helps extend the educational and cultural role of the service."The Premium Collection is self-financing and the income generated is used to provide funding for new DVD titles and display fixtures and fittings.
