Lifeboat postcard contest launched

CHILDREN across Weston are being asked to sharpen their pencils and get creative for an RNLI postcard competition.
The Weston branch of the lifesaving organisation has this week launched the contest, which is sponsored by the Mercury and is part of the town’s first ever Weston Lifeboat Week.
Once the winning design is chosen, it will be professionally printed and sold across the town.
Weston Lifeboat Week, which will run from July 30-August 7, is a fund-raising bonanza with events taking place throughout the week with the theme Go Mad For The RNLI.
In the run up to the week, children across the town and surrounding area will be designing a postcard depicting the RNLI in Weston.
Letters have gone out to schools across the district encouraging pupils to get involved.
Themes could include staying safe at the seaside, lifeboats or lifeguards, and entries will be judged in the age categories from keystages one to four.
All entries should be submitted on plain white A4 paper, in coloured or black and white artwork.
They must include the name, age and school of the pupil on the back, and should be sent to RNLI Weston Postcard Competition, c/o Weston, Worle & Somerset Mercury, 32 Waterloo Street, Weston-super-Mare, BS23 1LW.
The closing date for entries is Friday, June 10 and prizes will be awarded for each category at the RNLI Weston Open Day, at Anchor Head on August 7.
Winners will be awarded a framed copy of their design and an opportunity to visit the Lifeboat Station, with runners-up prizes also presented. qqThe winning designs will be professionally printed as postcards, and available to buy at the RNLI shop at Anchor Head, and various other locations in the town.
