A LARGE tree in Portishead will be lit for the first time this Christmas - in memory of the former chairman of the town's festive lights committee. The group of volunteers, which each year spend hours illuminating the town for the festive season, have been busy decking out the tree at the corner of South Avenue with hundreds of lights. The plan to light the tree was the brainchild of former chairman and Christmas lights stalwart Dave Hill who died four years ago. The scheme to light the tree cost £6,000 with the work being carried out by a specialist contractor. It is hoped that as well as a tribute to Mr Hill, the new illuminations will help link the old town to the new developments.Portishead Christmas Lights Committee spokesman Barry Randall said: "We are very excited to see what the tree will look like in all its splendour at the switch on next month.
