AN army of 26 litter-pickers took the day off from their day job at McDonald's to clean up Weston beach.

The volunteers removed 30 bags of rubbish from the beach in a bid to encourage the community to take responsibility for keeping the town litter-free.

People manager for the chain’s North Somerset branches Karen Upwards said: “The beach is a popular area for the community and tourists visiting the town, so when we heard there was a litter problem we were keen to do what we could to help.”

The group enjoyed a positive reaction from passers-by. Ms Upwards said: “It was enjoyable to be part of the clean-up and rewarding to be stopped by members of the public who wanted to show their appreciation for the work.

“Everyone should make a commitment to helping protect the local environment.”
