YOUTH clubs and organisations have the chance of scooping up to £2,000 in this year's Go Kids Go! competition - thanks to help from a number of generous Weston businesses.

The second annual scheme is being run in partnership between Weston Lions and the Mercury, to help out groups and children’s teams with their sports or activities.

This year the funding has gone up by an extra £4,000, thanks to the Grand Pier, Howards Motors, Nightingales and The Mead Group.

The Sovereign Shopping Centre, Weston Carnival Committee, Weston Town Council, the Mercury and the Lions have also contributed to the overall pot – leading the total to reach an impressive £10,000.

Last year the top awards of £1,000 were awarded by Michelle Michael of the pier and Alistair Mead from The Mead Group – which went to help the Milton Nomads Junior Football Club and the Hornets RFC’s juvenile club the Mini Stingers.

Peter Coleman from Howards Motors also awarded two funds of £500 to 1st Shipham Scouts and Winscombe Ladies Hockey Club.

Weston Lions has also increased its contribution to £3,000 this year.

If you run a community group that encourages sport and fitness for young people, are based within the postcode areas BS22, BS23, BS24 and BS25 and are a registered club, charity or not-for-profit organisation you can apply for a grant.

The grants could be used for schemes or items such as new training equipment, clubhouse improvements, playgroup equipment or kits, shirts and bats.

The Lions’ Eric Tones said: “It’s not just for sports, it’s for any organisation which will improve the wellbeing of youngsters such as scouts, guides, and anything which is encouraging young people to be active and take part in the community.

“A big thank you needs to go to all the companies that have put money in and to the Mercury.”

To apply for a grant as part of Go Kids Go! visit www.westonmercury.co.uk to download an application form or pick one up from the Mercury office.

When you have completed the form, send it to Go Kids Go!, The Weston, Worle & Somerset Mercury, 32 Waterloo Street, Weston-super-Mare, BS23 1LW or hand it in at our office. The deadline for applications is July 1 and the winners will be announced in the Mercury.
