A DETECTIVE from Weston has been commended for his role in bringing a 28-year-old man to justice for assaulting a vulnerable 15-year-old girl.

DC Matthew Bryant was given a crown court commendation at the Avon and Somerset Police Awards on May 20.

The judge praised DC Bryant for the thorough way in which he carried out his role and said he had ‘nothing but admiration for being trial-ready in such circumstances’.

The incident happened in March last year when the man repeatedly texted a girl after meeting her in the street.

He sent her a number of messages to try to convince her to go to his home.

The girl agreed and when she arrived, the man took off her clothes and seriously assaulted her.

The investigation was challenging as the girl and witnesses were reluctant to communicate with the police due to the violent reputation of the offender.

DC Bryant was the officer in charge of the investigation and maintained close contact with the girl to ensure she received the support she needed. The man was found guilty at Bristol Crown Court in December and was sentenced to 21 months in prison.
