Drivers are being advised to avoid the M5 after a three-vehicle crash near Weston-super-Mare.

The accident occurred on the northbound carriageway between junctions 22 and 21 (Burnham-on-Sea and Weston).

Highways England says the road is blocked, with motorists having to use the hard shoulder to squeeze by.

Queues are stretching back all the way to Bridgwater.

A Highways England spokesman said: “The carriageway between junctions 22 and 21 is expected to remain closed while the vehicles are recovered and any damage assessed.

“Vehicles are currently using the hard shoulder past the scene of the incident.

“Drivers leaving Devon and Cornwall and heading north today are asked to check the situation and consider alternative routes.”

UPDATE: (3.30pm): The road has reopened but traffic is queuing back to junction 24.
