A YOUTH hurled a stone at traffic on the M5 and smashed a lorry’s windscreen.

Police are hunting a group of youths following the incident near Highbridge, with officers saying the driver was incredibly lucky not to have been hurt.

Stones were thrown near where the motorway crosses the River Huntspill, between junctions 22 and 23.

PC Ross Brayley said: “Fortunately the driver was not injured and managed to avoid a collision despite the damaged windscreen.

“However, the outcome could have been very different and I want the people responsible to stop and think about the possible consequences of their actions.

“Throwing stones might seem minor to you but if someone had been seriously injured that would weigh on your conscience for a long time.”

Anyone who saw people acting suspiciously in the area on May 31 at about 8pm, is asked to contact the police on 101 and quote reference number 54782/14.
