A fatal collision has closed part of the M5 this morning (Thursday) with traffic beginning to stretch back to Weston-super-Mare.

A crash involving two lorries and a car at around 8.30am on the southbound carriageway between junctions 24 (Bridgwater) and 25 (Taunton) forced emergency services to close the motorway in both directions.

Although the northbound carriageway is now open, a closure remains in place southbound.

Police have confirmed two people were pronounced dead at the scene while four others have been taken to hospital with at least two suffering serious injuries.

The ambulance and fire services and police are all at the scene while Devon and Somerset Air Ambulance was in attendance.

Although the traffic has not yet reached the Mercury patch, it is likely to over the next few hours.

Highways England is urging drivers to take alternative routes and estimates the road to clear by 6.15pm.
