ONE lane of the M5 was closed this morning following a serious accident in the early hours of the morning.

The incident took place at just after 3am on the southbound lane between junctions 21 and 22.

The only car involved in the incident left the carriageway, ending up on its side with the driver trapped inside next to the cliff-face.

Avon Fire and Rescue freed the man, who is in his 30s, using hydraulic cutting equipment, and he was taken to hospital with neck, back and abdominal injuries.

The motorway has now been reopened to traffic after the vehicle was cleared from the area.
