M5 roadworks over the bank holiday

MILES of roadworks on the M5 will continue over the bank holiday.
The traditional surge towards Somerset, Devon and Cornwall at bank holidays often brings the motorway to a standstill and the issue could be worse than normal with one lane set to be shut southbound.
The Highways Agency, which is carrying out the scheme, has postponed 75 per cent of its roadworks programmes across the country during the holiday weekend, but the one-lane closure between Weston (junction 21) and Burnham (junction 22) will remain.
An agency spokesman said it cannot be lifted because at the moment the central renovation work is incomplete and safety is paramount.
The hard shoulder will be made available for drivers, with the agency expecting only ‘slight delays’.
The speed limit has also been dropped to 50mph in the affected area for the foreseeable future.
