A CONGESTION-busting scheme to unclog Weston's M5 junction at morning rush hour has been proposed.North Somerset Council's strategic planning and transport chief Councillor John Crockford-Hawley wants to see existing roads remodelled to create a non-stop lane leading to the motorway slipway from Bristol Road by North Somerset Magistrates Court.Under the scheme, traffic in the dual carriageway's left hand lane would not stop at the junction with Somerset Avenue or the motorway roundabout. Somerset Avenue's right hand lane would be given over to traffic going across the junction on the A370 and heading south on the M5.The proposal could involve installing an additional set of traffic lights on the motorway roundabout and on Somerset Avenue.Cllr Crockford-Hawley has asked his officers to look at the scheme to see if it could work.He said: "I'm convinced there are better arrangements which could be made for increasing the flow of traffic. My scheme wouldn't solve the problem, only big money can do that, but it might help to relieve some of the current troubles at the junction."Engineers are looking at it to see if there is enough width in the road to take the scheme. They will report back to me fairly soon."Given the limited financial resources we have to throw at the problem, I've put this scheme as a priority to ease the traffic flow in the morning.
