A 17-year-old girl was assaulted under the Grand Pier, in Marine Parade, at around 4am on Sunday.

The 22-year-old man, who is currently in custody, has also been arrested for an attempted sexual assault on an 18-year-old woman which happened at the same location at around 4am on September 2.

A police car and scientific investigations van were at the scene on Sunday morning and an area of the Pier was cordoned off.

Detective Sergeant Saj Rizvi said: “These are concerning incidents but I’d like to reassure people we are carrying out a thorough investigation.

“We have someone in custody and continue to carry out enquiries, such as reviewing CCTV footage from the area around the time of the assaults.

“These enquiries will feed into the work we continue to do with partners including licensing authorities, street pastors and private security firms to ensure people enjoying a night out are as safe as they can possibly be.

“The victims of these assaults, who were both left traumatised by them, have been offered expert help and support and we will continue to update them on the progress of our investigation.”

Anyone with information about either incident is urged to call investigations on 101, providing the call handler with the reference 5218207628.
