Police swooped on a Weston pub this afternoon (Wednesday) to arrested a man reportedly suspected of bag-snatch thefts in the town centre.

A witness told the Mercury that a suspicious person had entered the Charles Dickens Inn in Orchard Place to use the toilet.

When he emerged a few minutes later, he was greeted by a team of police officers, who managed to back him into a corner.

Reinforcements arrived in a riot fan, accompanied by a TV crew filming for the documentary series Neighbourhood Blues.

The witness said police had revealed the man had been wanted in connection with the theft of six women’s handbags.
