A man was rescued from Birnbeck Pier today (Thursday) after he attempted to swim to the dilapidated structure.

The coastguard and RNLI were called to the pier this afternoon after a man was spotted attempting to swim to the derelict pier and island.

He was recovered from the water clinging onto one of the pier legs and passed into the care of South Western Ambulance service.

A coastguard spokesman said: “The waters around Birnbeck Pier are dangerous due to strong tidal currents and swimming in the area should be avoided.

“If you see someone in difficulty on the coast, dial 999 for coastguard as minutes really do matter.”
